Traditionally, blue mussel cultivation has taken place with the main aim of producing food for human consumption. However, with increased interest in coastal eutrophication and nutrient loading, there has been a shift in focus to using mussel cultivation as a potential mechanism to combat eutrophication effects.
We have conducted, and continue to develop, research around mussel farming to mitigate the effects of eutrophication. These projects provide more knowledge on nutrient cycling around mussel farms, ecosystem effects associated with mitigation farming, and the value of other goods and services provided by these practices.
