Impact assessments of fisheries in nature conservation areas
The Danish Shellfish Centre conducts impact and stock assessments of fishing for mussels, oysters and starfish in nature conservation areas (Natura 2000 sites). Impact assessments are a scientific assessment of how fisheries in a given area will impact the ecosystem. Impact assessments are made every three years, while in the intervening years annual supplementary analyses are carried out, which are reported in notes.
The impact assessments and the notes are used by the Danish Agriculture and Fisheries Agency as a knowledge base for setting regulatory measures for fishing in the examnied areas. For example, the collected data are used to create protected areas for eelgrass beds and introduce depth limits for fishing.
