Danish Shellfish Centre works with all aspects of production in coastal areas, but our main focus is on shellfish. We do research info the traditional species like blue mussels and oysters and into “new” species as seaweed and starfish. Our research is often conducted in cooperation with the industry.

Danish Shellfish Centre provides public authorities with advice on sustainable exploitation of the living resources of the sea, e.g. what the consequences of mussel fisheries are on benthic fauna, eelgrass and birds. The advice forms the scientific basis for the legislation on fisheries in nature protection areas.

Production of shellfish and seaweed has a great potential in Denmark because of the country’s eutrophicated, but otherwise clean coastal waters. Danish Shellfish Centre develops and optimizes production of mussels, oysters and seaweed for food and other purposes, e.g. removing nutrients from the sea.
